The Tower (Fig. 3.19b), it seems, evaporative condensers, working on the principle of cooling through evaporation of water in the moving air stream. The effectiveness of this evaporative cooling depends on the wet bulb temperature of the air entering the unit, airflow volume and efficiency of air/water interface.

As mentioned above, cooling towers, in fact, a large evaporative coolers, which cools the water flows to the remote shell and tube refrigerant condenser. Please note that the cooling water is circulated through the tubes while the refrigerant vapor is condensed and going to in the bottom of the heat exchanger. Notice also that this area subcools refrigerant below the temperature of condensation, bringing cold water tower in this area of the condenser. The warmed cooling water is sprayed over the fill material in the tower. Some of it evaporates in the moving air stream. The process of evaporation cools the remaining water.

The amount of water used for cooling towers is essential. Not only water will evaporate, just to reject heat, but water must be added to avoid the buildup of dissolved solids in the basins of cooling towers.

If these solids build up to such an extent that they foul condenser surfaces, the performance of the unit can be greatly reduced.
