Testing for Open Windings Compressor

Place the test probe on one terminal. On the other probe touch the two terminals. The indicator should distract us. This shows that this scheme. Repeat the procedure until the circuit between terminals confirmed. There should be reading across each pair of terminals.

The windings of the three phases of the compressor differs from the single-phase compressors. In three phase compressor, you should read the same amount of resistance across the three windings. This is not true in single-phase compressors. The reason is that start-coil contains more wiring turns in order to develop more torque start. Run-winding has a larger cross section wire with fewer turns, thus, resistance readings will differ between the three windings. Knowing this, you can determine the windings in single-phase compressors.
