Refrigerant blends

Many of the new, alternative refrigerants 'blends'that have two or three components developed for existing and new plants as comparable alternative refrigerant replacement. They " zeotropes' with different evaporation or condensation temperature in the latent heat of vaporization stage, called 'temperature glide'. On Fig. 3.3 shows the change of the temperature of evaporation and condensation.

To compare the performance between one-component refrigerants and blends, you must specify the boiling temperature of the mixture in point A on the chart and dew point temperature in the point b.

Temperature glide can be used to advantage in improving plant performance, correct registration heat exchangers. Problems related to mixtures is that of refrigerant leakage results in changing the concentration of the components of the refrigerant.

However, tests show that small changes in the concentration (for example, less than 10%) has a negligible effect on the efficiency of the enterprise.

The following recommendations apply to the use of mixtures:

  • The plant should always be removed with liquid refrigerant, or the concentration of the components will be displaced.
  • Since most mixtures contain at least one FLAMMABLE component, the entry of air into the system must be avoided.
  • Mixtures which have a large temperature glide, more 5K should not be used for flooded type evaporators.
