The Stratospheric Ozone Layer

Stratospheric ozone is a chemical weapons destruction beyond the natural reactions and known as one of the global environmental problems (Fig. 2.1). It is shown that this question is mainly due to ozone layer depletion substances (ODS). Stratospheric ozone is constantly being created and destroyed through natural cycles. Various ODS, however, accelerate the processes of destruction, resulting in lower than normal levels of ozone. Depletion of this layer, ODS, will lead to increased UVB levels, which in turn will lead to growth of skin cancers and cataracts and potential damage to some marine organisms, plants, plastics.

Ozone depleting substances are compounds that contribute to the destruction of stratospheric ozone. RIA includes CFCs, HCFCs, halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride and methyl chloroform. RIAS tend to be very stable in the troposphere and only degrade under intense ultraviolet light in the stratosphere. When they break, they release chlorine atoms and bromine that then Deplete the ozone.

Three decades ago, Rowland and Molina first launched the theory that CFCs and some other anthropogenic pollutants in the atmosphere can act depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer by the catalytic action of free chlorine.

They predicted a very rapid decrease of the ozone concentration, despite the presence of ozone almost stable for almost 50 years, without any serious consideration. This theory led to a new stage of modelling stratospheric chemistry, and gave rise to a resumption of activities in the area. In fact, the most important moment that makes quite complex, natural air movement in all directions, air having about 40 different connections, giving several hundreds of possible reactions. Therefore, the models have been very difficult. The decrease in the average ozone is estimated to range between 0 and 10%, depending on the assumptions.
