Grouping and Classification of Refrigerants

Refrigerants have been awarded by various organizations. They came to a similar conclusion as to the toxicity and Flammability of refrigerant level. Toxicity-the ability of the refrigerant be harmful or lethal with acute or chronic exposure. This impact may be by contact, inhalation or ingestion.

Some of these organizations ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), HMIS (Hazardous Materials Identification System), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), NRSC (national Security Code for Cooling systems), and NBFU (national Board of Fire Underwriters).

ASHRAE toxicity classification of refrigerants is indicated by assigning a letter, A or B. refrigerants Class are those that were not identified as having a toxicity level. Class refrigerants toxicity level, which was determined. Standard used to identify this was the concentration at or below 400 parts per million (ppm).

The Flammability classification are specified number: 1 (no Flammability defined), 2 (low Flammability)or 3 (high Flammability).

Fig. 9-4 shows the grouping and classification of some common refrigerants, a more extensive explanation on the subject classification of refrigerants.
