Ammonia is a colorless gas with a strong smell which can be found at low levels (e.g., 0.05 ppm). Liquid ammonia is boiling under atmospheric pressure at -33 C. gas is lighter than air and little is soluble in water. Despite its high temperature resistance, to provide cooling, this can lead to a number of technical and medical issues, including the following (Dincer, 1997):
  • Gaseous ammonia irritate the eyes, throat, nose and skin. Although workers, apparently, develop a tolerance to ammonia, exposure to levels in the range of 5 to 30 ppm may cause eye irritation.
  • The impact of noise, 2500 ppm causes permanent eye damage, breathing difficulties, and an asthmatic, nausea, and chest pain.
  • Potentially fatal accumulation of fluid in the lungs may develop after a few hours after exposure. Fatal poisoning can lead to the development of bronchitis, pneumonia, lung.
  • Skin exposure to gaseous ammonia at very high levels causes skin irritation, burning of the skin, and the formation of fluid-filled blisters.
  • Eye contact with liquid ammonia can cause blindness and skin contact may lead to a potentially lethal chemical burns.
  • Ammonia is a flammable gas and form potentially explosive mixtures in the range of 16 to 25% from the air.

    Ammonia, which is soluble in water not flammable.
  • Ammonia reacts or produces explosives with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, as well as some other related chemical compounds.
  • Ammonia reacts with acids and produces some heat.
  • Ammonia vapor in the reaction with pairs of acids (e.g., HCl) to produce irritating white smoke.
  • Ammonia and ammonium-contaminated oil must be disposed of properly approved by the local regulatory authorities.
Despite its shortcomings, Lorentzen (1988) argue that ammonia is an excellent refrigerant and pointed out that these disadvantages can be eliminated with proper design and control of the refrigeration system.
