In the height of summer, there is nothing better than an ice-cold drink to quench their thirst. There are many soft drinks on the market today, many of them full of additives and too expensive. Try making your own smoothies entire family will enjoy them, and may even be inspired to dream up some new ones. ....
Do you find yourself longing for a cold drink that's a little different from the rest? Do your children fancy something zingy and refreshing that they can make themselves? Are you fed up with the same old drinks-in-a-can that cost a small fortune? Then try these cooling summer chillers, made from ingredients that are available at any supermarket or even from your own garden.
Cool Cranberry and Lemon Fizz Serves four
- 4 ozs sugar
- 400mls cranberry juice, chilled
- 400mls supermarket own-brand lemonade, chilled
- Half a pound of redcurrants
- A handful of blackcurrants
- Grated zest of two lemons, plus the juice
- Swirls of lemon peel to decorate
- Ice
Make a syrup by simmering the lemon zest, juice and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Put aside to cool. Place a couple of handfuls of ice into a clear jug. Pour the cooled syrup over the ice, then add the cranberry juice followed by the lemonade, stirring as you pour. Toss in the currants and the lemon peel swirls and serve.
Apple, Lemon and Lime Medley Serves four
- 4ozs sugar
- 400mls apple juice
- 400mls lemonade
- Juice from four lemons
- Juice from two limes
- Fresh mint leaves to decorate
- Lemon and lime wedges to decorate
Into each of four sundae glasses, place three or four chunks of ice followed by 100mls of lemonade. Gently float a scoop of ice cream onto the lemonade. Set each of the glasses on to a plate and place a few strawberry slices around the base of the glass. Serve with straws and dessert spoons. Enjoy these delicious drinks but have a go at creating your own, too. You'll be surprised at the different combinations you will come up with. |
